Carta abierta en apoyo a los académicos detenidos en Turquía
Como académicos asociados con diferentes universidades internacionales, estamos muy perturbados por las recientes detenciones de académicos que se han pronunciado contra las atrocidades que comete el Estado turco contra los kurdos de Turquía.
1.128 ‘Académicos por la Paz’ turcos y kurdos firmaron originalmente la declaración «No vamos a ser parte de este crimen«, pidiendo al gobierno turco el cese las hostilidades contra la población kurda. Desde la publicación de esta declaración, estos académicos han sido objeto de una campaña sostenida de abuso y violencia por el Estado turco y sus partidarios.
En discursos recientes, el presidente Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ha denunciado públicamente estos académicos. Posteriormente, los fiscales han comenzado los procedimientos para acusar a los 1128 firmantes originales de «hacer propaganda de una organización terrorista» y «abiertamente insultar a la nación turca, el Estado de la República de Turquía, la Gran Asamblea Nacional de Turquía, el Gobierno de la República de Turquía y los órganos judiciales del Estado «.
Esto ha dado lugar a la detención de 22 académicos (en el momento de escribir este comunicado). Si se les decarase culpables de estos cargos podrían enfrentarse de uno a cinco años de prisión. La legitimidad de las detenciones ya ha sido cuestionada por expertos legales prominentes y se describe como decisiones «extra-legales«. Los firmantes también han sid expuestos públicamente en la prensa y redes sociales por partidarios del gobierno y los nacionalistas, dando lugar a temores de represalias por parte de los fascistas que han declarado que van a «derramar la sangre» de los firmantes. Muchos de los firmantes también se enfrentan a procedimientos disciplinarios y los posibles despidos de sus instituciones.
Estos actos injustos se están desarrollando en un contexto de continua violencia estatal contra poblaciń kurda – sólo en diciembre másde 100 kurdos murieron como resultado de las operaciones militares llevadas a cabo por el Estado turco. Desde agosto de 2015 han sido 52 los toques de queda impuestas a más de un millón de habitantes en el sureste de Turquía. En tal contexto, la fuerte represión a la libertad académica constituye otra muestra del profundo autoritarismo del Estado turco que incluye ataques no sólo aacadémicos, sino también el encarcelamiento y muertes de periodistas, abogados y activistas.
Hacemos un llamado al gobierno de Turquía a retirar los cargos inmediatamente y a poner en libertad a los encarcelados respetando los principios de la libertad académica y la libertad de expresión. Reafirmamos nuestro apoyoa la llamada a la Paz realizada por los académicos, y exigimos al Gobierno turco el cese de hostilidades contra los kurdos.
